Tambour Battant Promo Mix

French newcomers Tambour Battant have dropped this jumpy promo mix that lies somewhere in the electro-house, glitch hop, fidget, dubstep and even baile funk realms.  You may remember them for their Major Lazer or Missill remixes. Their new EP  ‘On The Ground’ will be out soon on Expressillon recordings.

ALOE BLACC – I NEED A DOLLAR (VIDEO)

While sadly I actually prefer the condensed version in the opening credits of “How To Make it in America” it seems like Aloe and his crew realized that maybe there wasn’t more than just a six-figure hook and tacked on”So Hard” a new track from his upcoming album Good Things, on Stones Throw.

Jay Electronica Preaches Pluralism

The Comparative Religions bachelor’s degree holder in me is loving the religious pluralism in this tee. Available for only $12 US at http://www.xistheweapon.com/.  To read more about Jay Electronica’s recent work, check out my article on Chin Injeti and the New Royale’s here, or in the Spinner sidebar.

We interrupt this blog for a brief commercial break…

And now, a word from our sponsors!  Hah, I wish. Ahhh, la vie campagnard! C’est ben pour moi, hosti!

Molson nails the terroir market of the Quebec Profond on the head with this classic.  I love the donkey reference and  the type at the end. For all non-French speakers, the tagline translates to something of the effect of ‘For real taste, try the real thing” Good thing copyright laws get murky when you cross languages.

DJ Nu-Mark & His Million Dollar Toy Show

(Don’t forget to click on Part 2 of the set!)

The last time I remember seeing DJ Nu-Mark was maybe five years ago at the Jurassic 5 show and he pulled out a PlaySkool mini turntable which he used to scratch on 45s with. The crowd went bonkers, and it was probably the first concert cellphone video I ever took. Those 6 seconds of A/V gold were a sheer delight for friends and random strangers that I entertained in the months to come.

When I heard that Nu-Mark was coming back and doing a solo ‘toy’ show, I was immediately intrigued. Billed as ‘DJ Nu-Mark and His Wondrous Toys’ (yes, wondrous IS a word), he threw down a 15 mn or so show using various toys, props and noisemakers taxed from Value Villages, thrift shops and digital eBay vendors from around the world. The rest of his set was listenable but not exactly mind-blowing, mostly top 40s hiphop, funk, and dance hits that you could have tuned in to at any bar on the globe. But it’s not like he didn’t throw in his own million dollar skills because, damn, that guy is fucking talented. He even threw in a smidgen of dubstep with the A-Skillz ‘ Strawberry Fields’ remix, which was a nice nod but he really could have pushed things a bit further considering the not-so-mainstream crowd that Make It Funky tends to bring out.

Michael Leonhart and the Avramina 7 – Seahorse & The Storyteller

Talk about a mouthful of a name. It’s a daunting title but you know what? Seahorse & The Storyteller shows some very highbrow, expertly crafted psychedelic funk from a behind the scenes industry veteran who obviously doesn’t give a crap about marketing, positioning or placement. Give this guy a listen and you’ll shake your head in shame at RJD2 who failed miserably at creating this kind of psychedelic R&B sound on The 3rd Hand album. On the other hand, (yes, it’s a pun), it’s possible that Michael may have even jacked the sound from poor old RJ just to show him up?

Well, probably not, since Michael Leonhart is not an upstart by any means. He’s an extremely accomplished jazzman who’s orchestrated works with shot callers like Busta Rhymes, D.J. Spooky, David Byrne, Henry Mancini, James Brown, Lenny Kravitz, Levon Helm, Mark Ronson, Mos Def, Natalie Merchant, Q-Tip, Raekwon, Yoko Ono, and oh so many more.

Although it’s still early in the year, I feel this album may become the most overlooked album of 2010. Do ears a favour and uncover this funky gem of a disc that heavily draws influence from artists like R.D Burman, The Beatles, Fela Kuti, and 60’s psychedelia. It’s out on Truth & Soul Records, also the home of El Michel’s Affair (whom have performed as the Wu’s backup string band), and The Phenomenal Handclap Band.

How To Make It!

The hottest show on tv right now is How To Make It In America.  It pretty much sums up  the life I would be living while I was working with Formatmag had I been actually living in NYC and not posing as Brooklynite from my Kensington Market home.  However, for all you Estonian readers out there who may not know (and I know you are reading!), there are quite a bit of similarities between Toronto’s Kensington Market, and NYC’s Lower East Side, and Brooklyn.
