Not sure who still downloads music from the internets these days but a couple of douchebag producers by the name of Altered: Carbon thought it would be fun to upload their new album to Soulseek and name it after Autechre’s soon to be released Warp Records project, ‘Oversteps‘. They claim that it was an “accident” that the directory was titled so, and by all means had no intentions of stealing hype from Autechre, or attempting to seek attention through these actions. Seems like a bit of a case of half-assed copycatting as experimental artist, Fluorescent Grey, pulled a similar prank, after Autechre’s Confield was released. At least he had the sense to unapologetically mock the group.
Well, it seems like a whole shit load of negative attention is going to be coming the way of the Carbon:Copy crew. I don’t see how anyone would do this by accident, or unintentionally, especially when if you go to Section 27, their label’s Myspace page, you will see that they even compare their sound to Warp Records! COME ONNNN! These guys are so busted.
It’s a shame because I did like some of the tracks on the album, but its really hard to respect these guys as artists after pulling a stunt like this. Posted below is their half-assed explanation/apology off of their Myspace Blog:
“In response to the silly bit of internet nonsense of our LP being leaked as the new “Oversteps” album by Autechre, let us put a few things right.
The purpose of this “leak” had nothing to do with trying to pass an album off as Autechre, it was targeting those who will only listen to something for plain aesthetic value rather than for its content, and taking the complete piss out of those people. The ones who for example would buy a 12″ with the sound of Aphex Twin’s bowel movements, just because its RDJ and not for its artistic merit and content of the music, which is a sad fact about a few of the bigger Electronica artists. It only creates dissillusionment.
Our album had been renamed with the wrong titles and put on Soulseek, the people who found it were the ones causing the gossip and hysteria about its authenticity. We had said nothing about it until we asked someone to debunk it on a forum as the joke was getting a bit too big for our liking, despite personally finding it amusing, come on there’s a fucking Reaktor sound from the Gaugear on one track…. Even we knew it wasn’t authentic enough sounding to be believed. We don’t care about promotion for this Altered:Carbon project, contrary to your thoughts on this stunt. We only came out to debunk. Let’s face it here, if that had not happened with our album, somebody else would have leaked something else as “Oversteps” and the same thing would have happened.
Anyone in the Ae fanbase who knows and loves the work of Autechre will have known straight away from hearing any of these “fake” tracks that what they had downloaded was a tongue-in-cheek prank aimed at the “IDM fanboys” on certain internet forums and dismissed it there, and in no way aimed at taking anticipation off of the release of Oversteps. The ones who have the patience to wait for its’ imminent release will be the most rewarded.
This was an exercise in seeing how quickly false information spreads. Sure, Fluorescent Grey proved this last time, seems no-one learned this time either. We have a lot of respect for both Rob and Sean and WARP Records having been influenced ourselves by their art, and in no way is this intentionally to piss them off. It’s not like any Autechre fans are not going to buy “Oversteps” because of a fake release, get real. Anyone who got the fake and was disappointed, serves you right. Check facts before you distribute information, you have nobody to blame but yourselves here. If you love your artists, support them. Go to a show.
Maybe Ae even agree with us. Roll on March 22nd. We ordered our “Oversteps..” ;)”

Altered:Carbon added these pithy words on Jan 26 10 at 3:55 pmClearly you missed the point. We didn’t say at all it was an “accident”. We said all we did was have a file containing our album which had been renamed as Oversteps on our hard drive and Soulseekers found it and distributed it all over the internet. We never posted it anywhere. We love Fluorescent Grey, he’s hilarious. Makes great music too. We haven’t made a fake beheading vid though.
Section 27 don’t compare themselves to Warp Records, HipGnosis (Glitch Hop producer and GlitchFM DJ) compared them to Warp Records and Merck on a mix he did in December as a S27 showcase on his show. Maybe if you had actually researched this statement you would have known where it came from.
If you must know the responses we have had in light of all this nonsense was mostly positive, and equally as flippant. Once again you should have researched this before venting an angry post on the internet. Its just music. Something tells us you secretly liked our LP and had you not found out it was a joke you would have been none the wiser. Where’s your sense of humour then?
It’s only music, this is only the internet, you are only a human being. This is only a message. Cheer up.
Altered:Carbon added these pithy words on Jan 27 10 at 1:34 pmHmmm, it appears your criticism is flimsy if you couldn’t even post our last response to it.
Jesse Ship added these pithy words on Jan 28 10 at 9:48 pm*moan* okayyy, there you go. Let’s carry on, would love to see/hear some of this positive feedback you guys are experiencing.
In my defence, it’s pretty hard to understand that something is being quoted when there are no quotation marks around the phrase. Don’t blame me for shoddy research, blame your label for not even giving credit to the esteemed dj/producer who had lovely things to say about it.
Also, for the record, I never said I didn’t like your album, but i did think that things go a little too wonky at track 9 and it just throws the whole thing off. The result of the noise/dissonance was more annoyance than catharsis. Had it not been a spoof, i would have thought, “hmm, Autechre kinda sucks on this album. Whats going on?”
Happy?
